HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A high surf advisory has been posted for most north and west-facing shores as a new swell from the northwest brings another round of potentially dangerous waves.
The National Weather Service said the advisory will be in effect from noon Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday for the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai and the north shores of Maui.
Waves on north shores are expected to peak at 12 to 16 feet for north shores, while west shores will see wave of 8 to 12 feet.
Strong breaking waves and strong currents from the swell will make swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, especially visitors unfamiliar with local beach conditions, are urged to heed all advice from ocean safety officials.
This swell follows a massive Thanksgiving weekend swell that resulted in 15 rescues and about 10,000 preventative actions or warnings along Oahu’s North Shore last Friday alone.
Another northwest swell is expected to bring more advisory-level surf Thursday into Friday.
